Cooling towers are potentially significant sources of Legionnaires' disease because of their ability to spread aerosol over a wide area. Consequently, they come under increased surveillance.

Cooling systems for industrial processes and air conditioning units operate at 35°C - 45°C, the ideal temperature for Legionella bacteria proliferation, and the towers are natural air scrubbers, providing nutrients for bacterial growth. In addition to ACoP L8, all cooling towers must be registered with the Local Authority in which they are sited: it is the law!

Water contains three types of impurities: dissolved solids, dissolved gases and suspended matter, all of which combine to accelerate corrosion, scale build-up and microbial activity. Left unchecked within a cooling system, they can cause a variety of expensive problems:

		Loss of heat transfer
		Reduced equipment life, increased equipment failures
		Lost production/profits
		Increased maintenance costs
		Complete plant shutdown

Not only do the impurities combine to accelerate growth, considering each individually is also a problem because the treatment for one can accelerate the growth of another.
